Information on landowner tags for New Mexico deer
Along the Oxbow
New (Pending) World Record SCI Mule Deer
Chad Smith (Vaquero Outfitters, PO Box 1633, Chino Valley AZ 86323) arrived a few days early on the ranch in Sonora, Mexico, and was just getting settled in for the 2003/04 hunting season. On an early morning scouting venture, he located what appeared to be a monster buck at considerable distance, but he wasn’t sure if he was looking at one big deer, two good deer or two giants. The horns from one animal seemed intertwined with the other, and he finally lost them in the thick brush and cacti. Either way, he knew he had to go back and sort out those bucks.
For the duration of the 2003/04 season, there were no reports of anyone killing a buck that matched the description of what Chad thought he saw, so he went back in December 2004 to look again. A report from a vaquero (cowboy) on one of the ranches suggested the big buck(s) were seen, so Chad started from scratch. Then, one of the cowboys came up with a set of sheds, proving beyond any doubt that the monster buck survived the 2004 hunting season.
